Nellie Ruth Bobo Benson

Nellie Ruth Bobo Benson, 100, of Woodruff, passed away on Thursday, August 5, 2021 surrounded by her loving family. Born June 21, 1921 in Spartanburg County. She was the daughter of Miles and Fannie Williams Bobo. A consummate mother and home-maker, an excellent cook who enjoyed preparing meals for her family and friends. She also enjoyed quilting, canning and gardening. She personified Christian faith, love, and character and was a great matriarch of six generations of family. She was married to the late T.L. Benson, Sr. and they had 11 children, 37 grandchildren, 57+ great grandchildren, and 32+ great great grandchildren. She was a member of Lower Shady Grove Baptist Church and served faithfully as Mother of the Church, member of the Missionary Ministry and Sunday School. Nellie exemplified God's love in everything she did and her strong Christian Faith was evident in what she said and the way she carried herself. She naturally inspired others by sharing her love of Christ. Whether it was cooking and giving food, her time, her wisdom, a listening ear, a hug, a fussing at, or a prayer, there wasn't anything Nellie wasn't willing to share in order to help someone else. Along with her many children and grandchildren, she was well known for caring and providing for countless others in the community and affectionately called "Mother Benson" by her church family and “Grandma Biscuit” by her grandchildren. Her life will forever be cherished in the lives of her children: Dorothy (John) Garrett, Marietta Georgia; Martha Louise Booker, Spartanburg, SC; Mary Howard; Frances Benson Black, both of Kansas City, Mo.; Thomas (Jeanette) Benson, Lyman, SC; Lawrence Benson, Woodruff, SC; Lois (Charles) Allen; Bernerdine (Collie) Feemster; and Deborah Benson Evans, all of Spartanburg, SC. She was preceded in death by her husband, TL, Sr., her sons, David Benson and Lee (LT) Benson, grandson, Kerry Garrett, great grand children Tyler Benson, Christian Benson, a beloved son-in-law, Claude Booker, Jr. and her 6 siblings. She is survived by her sister, Rosie Bobo Gentry and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Visitation will be 4:00-7:00 PM Saturday, August 14, 2021 at Living Waters Funeral Home & Crematory, 529 Spartanburg Hwy. S., Lyman, SC 29365. Her funeral will be held at Lower Shady Grove Baptist Church on Sunday, August 15, 2021 at 2:00 P.M., officiated by Rev. Vincent M. Perry. Eulogy will done by Reverend Audrey V. Hailstock. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Nellie’s private duty caregivers, Judy Bruton and Karen Workman, and to the Spartanburg Regional Hospice caregiver, Kimberly Whitmire. Due to COVID-19, masks are required and social distancing practiced.
